Tips & Tricks

Usage of “My Tags”

The “My Tags” feature as part of PIE and PIE Studio is fairly powerful:

  • Create your personal set of photo metadata. Instead of switching between EXIF, IPTC or XMP sections and scrolling through long lists, you can see the most important metadata at a glance.
  • Any tag added to “My Tags” is made available as column for the metadata list, for the report, and for renaming (in PIE Studio also for printing)
  • “My Tags” are also included in the search, when selecting Find->Other metadata.
  • You can have custom tag names in the full metadata panel.

To configure “My Tags”, enable the full metadata panel in the main window (View menu or F4).

Metadata Templates

Templates in the EXIF, IPTC and GPS dialogs will greatly improve your productivity. Instead of entering data such as photographer name or copyright notice again and again, create a template for this task.

Templates can also be used for adding predefined sets of keywords or categories, and you can apply various templates successively. It is very flexible.

Have manual lenses that don’t provide EXIF data for aperture or focal length? Create a template for each lens!

The easiest way to create a template: Open the EXIF, IPTC or GPS dialog and enter the data. Don’t hit OK yet. Instead, click Templates->Create. All modified fields are automatically selected. You deselect or select the fields to include in the template as you wish.

To apply the template, select one or more files in the file browser, open the editor, and select the template from the list. Hit OK to save.

Delete RAW+JPG

PIE and PIE Studio allow to delete RAW+JPG files with a single click, even though they were imported to different folders. See right click context menu or press Ctrl+Del (or Shift+Ctrl+Del for permament deletion).

The entry in the context menu only appears if a RAW/JPG relationship was recognized:

  • Same filename (except extension)
  • Files in the same folder or RAW file in folder/subfolder as defined in the import settings

Select Viewer Images

In the viewer, you can easily toggle images, with the mouse wheel, cursor keys or PageUp/PageDown.

Did you know that you can choose the images that you want to appear in the viewer? By default it is the entire folder, but you if you select more than one image in the file browser before opening the viewer, only the selected images will be displayed. Great for comparing and evaluating similar photos!
